Summer Is Coming!!

Almost summer… and everything looks beautiful, doesn’t it?!

One of the many only-in-the-summer things that I label “favourite”, is heading out to buy my groceries at a farmers’ market. Many markets in our area, running from sometime in May until autumn, are open now, with more and more fruits and vegetables promising to appear as the weeks pass.

I dropped in to the market at the Burlington Mall parking lot this week - happy to see it open - where I passed by local asparagus and greenhouse plants, and smelled the breads and goodies of several bakers I hadn’t seen last year.  I’m excited to return over the next weeks to buy strawberries from nearby fields, plums from orchards in the area and beets from the farmers’ own gardens.

Fruits and vegetables aren’t the only things that fill my bags at these markets though. Gorgeous fresh cut flowers, delicious baked goods, unique preserves, along with local meat, cheese and eggs  - are all available to be discovered and tasted.  And, you’ll find these flavourful treasures vary from week to week, and market to market …so it’s the summer to explore!

Local, fresh and mostly organic is what keeps me returning year after year to shop at a farmers’ market.  Berries just taste sweeter and apples crunch louder when they’ve been picked the day before they’re loaded in the trucks and brought to a market for us to enjoy.

Join me in celebrating the bounty of Ontario and supporting the hard working farmers in the region.  You’ll be happy you made the drive to one of these Farmers’ Markets  just a short drive from Oakville:

Burlington Mall Farmers’ Market - back parking lot, Burlington Mall

Milton Farmers’ Market - Main Street Milton

Oakville Citivan Farmers’ Market - Dorval crossing parking lot

Oakville Place Farmers’ Market - Oakville Place parking lot

Check out the website here for all the details, hours, and more to keep you happily exploring!
